Directions to Our Practice
If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take:
- If you want to come around the north side of White Bear Lake, take Mahtomedi Ave north out of town, continue on Dellwood Ave, then turn left onto Lake Ave. Get onto US-61 heading south, then turn right onto County Rd E. After the overpass and after you pass Walmart, turn right into the shopping center. Turn left into the parking lot of Marshalls, and we’re farther along among the shops, at 925 Co Rd E East #185.
- If you want to come around the south side of White Bear Lake, take Wildwood Rd and continue west as that becomes County Rd E. Continue as in the above directions.
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Mahtomedi’s name comes from the Dakota words for White Bear Lake: “mato,” meaning grey bear, and “mde,” meaning lake. Originally part of Lincoln Township along with present-day Dellwood, Wildwood, and a portion of White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi was officially platted as a village in 1883 by the First Mahtomedi Assembly of Chautauqua Association. This organization, which began in New York to train Sunday school teachers, later expanded its focus to adult education and brought culture and learning to the growing community.
During its early years, Mahtomedi flourished as a summer destination. The Chautauqua Association built cottages and summer homes throughout the village, and members often set up tents for seasonal gatherings — one summer saw over 3,000 tents dotting the landscape. A large amphitheater was constructed near Ham Lake, and the YMCA later added a clubhouse complete with a dock, boathouse, and dining room, further establishing the area as a hub for education and recreation.
The arrival of the Minneapolis & St. Paul Suburban Railroad Co. in 1892 brought even more visitors to Mahtomedi. By 1899, the Twin City Rail Transit Company provided regular service between Mahtomedi and neighboring Stillwater, making the area more accessible than ever. The company’s most notable contribution was the establishment of Wildwood Amusement Park and picnic grounds along the southeast shore of White Bear Lake. Featuring a rollercoaster, plane rides across the lake, and various attractions, the park became a popular destination that drew crowds from St. Paul and helped shape Mahtomedi into the vibrant community it is today.Retry
